 Activity - 1

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow :

'One Thousand and One Nights' is a collection of the Middle Eastern folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It is often known in English as 'The Arabian Nights'. The work was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars across West, Central and South Asia and North Africa. The bulk of the text is in prose, although verse is occasionally used for songs and riddles and to express serious emotion. Some of the stories commonly associated with 'The Arabian Nights', in particular, 'Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp', "Alibaba and the Forty Thieves' and 'The Seven Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor' were not part of 'The Arabian Nights' in its original Arabic version. These stories were added to the collection by Antoine Galland and other European translators.

Develop the following outline into a story. Add a suitable title and a moral to your story :

Stag was drinking water - saw the image of his horns - admired them - disliked slender legs - chased by a pack of wolves - horns caught in thick bush - lamented

  The Stag And His Horns   

Once there lived a stag in a dense forest. There was a stream inside the forest. All the animals were used this water. The stag was very thirsty. He went to the stream to drink water. He saw the reflection of his horns in the water. He felt proud. When he saw the reflection of his legs, he felt ashamed and cursed God for this injustice. He admired his horns and disliked slender legs. Just then, a pack of wolves came and they chased him.

      He ran away as fast as he could. His thin legs helped him to escape. He realised that his ugly looking legs were his real friends.

Soon his beautiful horns proved an enemy to him. They got entangled in a bush. He tried his best to release himself. But he could not succeed. The pack of wolves reached there. They killed him.

Moral : All glittering ornaments are not gold.
